City Living – a creative act

“To those who have no interest in it, the city is basically transparent, and people can pass though it without negative consequences. Each citizen must construct his own special relationship to various small parts of the seemingly chaotic, context-less city of today. The contemporary city is a unique reality for each individual. The landscape does not exist as such; it must be conceptualized and constructed by a subject.”

This passage in a pamphlet published by the well known architect Fumiko Maki showed me a different way to look at my favorite city. With the aid of photographs and maps I will describe the Tokyo I have “conceptualized and constructed”. I hope to then provide a forum for other colloquium participants to heighten their awareness of both of their own Tokyos, and of the creative act which is city living.

Andrew Kable was born in Australia and has lived in cool cities such as Sydney, Canberra, Seattle, London, Tsukuba and is now resident in Tokyo. He has a degree from Australian National University and currently is a team manager in Wall Street Associates, a recruitment firm specializing in introducing mid-career English speaking accounting, IT and HR professionals to foreign companies in Tokyo and Osaka. He is interested in almost everything, but particularly in cities, architecture and design.
