Over the past few years, I have become particularly interested in a photographic technique known as HDRI (high dynamic range imaging) which allows much more detail and tonal range to be seen in a photographic image, giving it a ’painterly‛ look.

After the triple disaster of 11 March last year, I had a chance to visit the stricken areas a number of times in my work as a journalist. I encountered scenes beyond anything I had ever imagined. They were visions of immense contradiction: heartbreaking, and yet fascinating at the same time, an ordinary world turned upside down by an awesome power.

I shot the scenes I came across in HDRI, in order to try to convey both the tragedy and terrible beauty of what I was seeing. These photographs are the result.
