Mittwoch, 6. September 2023, 19:00–21:00 Veranstaltungshinweis: Rakugo auf Englisch mit Tatekawa Shinoharu im OAG-Saal

Oyama mairi

Mt. Oyama in Kanagawa Prefecture was one of the most popular pilgrimage sites in Japan, attracting as many as 200,000 pilgrims during the short summer pilgrimage season. With colorful images from woodblock prints, Alice Gordenker will show us how the pilgrimage was part of the lively culture of tradespeople in Edo (present-day Tokyo).

Tatekawa Shinoharu

History in the making: “Oyama-mairi,” a rakugo story about silly happenings during the Oyama pilgrimage, had never been translated. Shinoharu developed the first-ever English version, which we’ll hear as part of this special program.
